Key Largo Dive Sites — Reefs, Wrecks & Underwater Attractions
Explore Key Largo’s most celebrated reefs and wrecks — with or without a guide.

Spiegel Grove
At 510 feet long, the Spiegel Grove is one of the largest artificial reefs in North America and one of the most celebrated wreck dives in the world. Intentionally sunk in 2002, it now sits in 65–130 feet of water and is blanketed in coral and marine life. Advanced divers can penetrate multiple decks while intermediate divers explore the superstructure and exterior. A Key Largo bucket-list dive.
Molasses Reef
Molasses Reef is one of the most visited dive sites in the world and the crown jewel of Key Largo scuba diving. Located inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, this sprawling shallow-to-medium depth reef sits in 20–35 feet of crystal-clear water, making it perfect for divers of all experience levels. Expect vibrant coral formations, sea turtles, eagle rays, nurse sharks, and an explosion of tropical fish on every dive. If you only dive one reef in the Florida Keys, make it Molasses.
Christ of the Abyss
One of the most iconic underwater landmarks in the world — and it lives right here in Key Largo. The 9-foot bronze statue stands in 25 feet of crystal-clear water inside John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, arms raised toward the surface, surrounded by coral and tropical fish. A bucket-list moment for divers of every level. Shallow enough for beginners, breathtaking enough for everyone.
French Reef
Known for dramatic swim-throughs, caverns, and archways draped in coral, French Reef offers an underwater landscape that feels genuinely adventurous at every turn. Depths range from 15–45 feet inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, with spotted eagle rays, moray eels, grouper, and dense schools of tropical fish around every corner. One of the Florida Keys’ best-kept secrets — and one of our favorite dives.
Duane
The USCGC Duane is one of the most celebrated wreck dives in the Caribbean and a cornerstone of Key Largo scuba diving. This 327-foot Coast Guard cutter was intentionally sunk in 1987 and now rests upright in 120 feet of water, her bow rising to within 60 feet of the surface — blanketed in coral and swarming with goliath grouper, barracuda, and tropical fish. Advanced divers explore the bridge and deck while intermediate divers work the shallower superstructure. Paired with the Spiegel Grove, the Duane makes Key Largo one of the greatest wreck diving destinations on the planet.

Key Largo Scuba Diving — Frequently Asked Questions
Is Key Largo good for beginner scuba divers?
Absolutely — Key Largo is one of the most beginner-friendly scuba diving destinations in the world. The water is warm (75–88°F year-round), visibility is excellent (30–60 feet), and training dives take place in shallow, protected reef environments. Our beginner courses are specifically designed for first-time divers, with small classes of never more than 4 students per instructor.
How long does it take to get PADI certified in Key Largo?
The PADI Open Water Diver course takes 2 to 3 days of in-water training at Scuba-Fun, plus approximately 6–8 hours of PADI eLearning completed online before you arrive. On the 3-day schedule, day one is a full pool session and days two and three are open water training dives. On the 2-day schedule, pool skills run in the morning and open water dives in the afternoon of both days.
What certification do I need to dive in Key Largo?
For our guided reef and wreck dive trips, you need a minimum Open Water Diver certification (PADI, SDI, NAUI, SSI, or equivalent). For the Try Scuba Diving program, no certification is required. Advanced dive sites like the Spiegel Grove wreck require Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent.
What dive sites does Scuba-Fun visit in Key Largo?
We dive all of Key Largo’s most celebrated sites — Molasses Reef, French Reef, Elbow Reef, the Spiegel Grove wreck, the Duane wreck, Christ of the Abyss, and more — all inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Dive site selection on each trip is based on conditions, diver experience, and preferences. View all Key Largo dive sites →
What happens if weather conditions are bad?
Safety always comes first. If ocean conditions prevent diving, we either reschedule or conduct dives at our protected lagoon alternative at Jules Undersea Lodge — a genuine open water environment where conditions are always calm. Your certification or dive experience is not delayed. Please see our cancellation and refund policy → for full details.
What scuba courses do you offer in Key Largo?
We offer a full range of PADI and SDI scuba courses: Discover Scuba Diving (Try Scuba), Open Water Diver Certification, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Specialty Courses, Refresher Course, and Divemaster. All courses run daily in small groups of never more than 4 students per instructor. View all courses and rates →
Do I need experience to try scuba diving in Key Largo?
No — our Discover Scuba Diving program is designed for complete beginners with no prior experience. You’ll start with a pool session in the morning where your instructor teaches you everything you need to know, then head out to two of Key Largo’s coral reef sites for guided dives in the afternoon. No certification required.
How many students are in each scuba class?
Never more than 4 students per instructor — and that is a firm limit, not a guideline. PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor in many courses. We choose to cap every class at 4 because we believe individual attention is what makes the difference between a nervous student and a confident diver.
Can certified divers plan custom dive trips with Scuba-Fun?
Yes — custom dive trip planning for certified divers is one of our specialties. Tell us your certification level, what you want to dive, and when you’re visiting — we build a personalised itinerary around you. Reef dives, wreck dives, night dives, multi-day packages. Contact us to plan your custom dive trip →
Can I fly after scuba diving in Key Largo?
Yes — but you must wait a minimum of 18 hours after your last dive before flying. This allows excess nitrogen to safely leave your body. If you’re flying home after a dive trip, plan your travel for the day after your last dive.
