The PADI  Open Water Scuba Diver certification course is top-rated worldwide! This open water diver certification is accepted everywhere and never expires. If you’ve always dreamed of taking scuba diving lessons, experiencing amazing adventures, and discovering the world beneath the waves, then this is the perfect place to begin. It’s your ticket to a lifetime of marine exploration! Our training approach focuses on “Comfort Through Repetition,” allowing you to learn at your own pace. This ensures that you can build confidence and master your diving skills, setting you up for a lifetime of underwater fun!

Never More Than 4 Students Per Instructor

PADI allows a maximum of 8 students per instructor — we cap ours at 4. That’s half the industry standard, and it makes a real difference. Smaller classes mean your instructor knows your name, your comfort level, and your pace before you ever enter the water. If you need more time on a skill, you get it. If you’re ready to move faster, we move faster. Your certification is built around you, not a fixed schedule.

Your Certification Never Expires — Dive Anywhere in the World

The PADI Open Water Diver certification is a lifetime licence. Once you earn it, it never expires and is recognised by dive operators in every country on the planet. Whether you dive next week or come back to it in ten years, your card is still valid. It’s one of the best investments you can make in a life of travel and adventure — and Key Largo is one of the best places in the world to earn it.

Comfort Through Repetition — We Move at Your Pace

Our approach to teaching is simple: you practice each skill until it feels natural, not until the clock says it’s time to move on. Feeling uncertain about clearing your mask? We do it again. Not quite comfortable with your buoyancy? We spend more time on it. The goal isn’t just to get you certified — it’s to get you to a place where you feel genuinely confident underwater, so that your first dive after certification is something you enjoy, not something you endure.

When you arrive in Key Largo, your in-water training unfolds over two or three days:

On the 3-day schedule — day one is a full day in the pool mastering all required skills with your instructor. Days two and three each involve a half-day of open water training dives on Key Largo’s coral reefs — four dives total, at different reef sites each time.

On the 2-day schedule — pool skills in the morning and open water training dives in the afternoon, both days.

Your instructor is with you throughout — same person, pool to ocean.

Course fee: $679 per student (plus applicable tax). This includes the PADI eLearning, all course materials, gear rental, entry and charter fees, all instruction, and your certification. Any eLearning registration fees you’ve already paid to PADI are deducted from the total.

Warm water, world-class reefs, and conditions built for first-time divers.

Key Largo’s protected waters and year-round conditions make it one of the most sought-after certification destinations on the planet.

Key Largo sits at the northern end of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary — 3,000 square miles of protected coral reef, crystal-clear water, and abundant marine life. Water temperatures range from 75–88°F year-round, visibility regularly reaches 30–60 feet, and training dive sites sit in just 20–35 feet of water — calm, warm, and ideal for building confidence underwater.

Most of the time your four open water training dives take place on Key Largo’s living coral reefs, alongside sea turtles, tropical fish, and coral formations you won’t find in a cold lake or a quarry. When sea conditions require it, we conduct training dives in a protected lagoon instead — still an exceptional environment, still in the Florida Keys, and still a world away from learning to dive in a swimming pool.

Wherever your training dives take place, you’re learning in one of the great diving destinations on Earth. That makes a difference — not just for your certification, but for the kind of diver you become.

Already started your Open Water certification elsewhere but still need your four open water training dives? You’re in the right place. Scuba-Fun welcomes referral students from any scuba school or instructor — bring your paperwork and we’ll get you certified on Key Largo’s coral reefs in as little as two half days.

PADI Referrals — $400 per student

To complete your dives with us you’ll need your student record and course progress form, filled out, signed, and dated by your original instructor. Your last course activity must be within 12 months — if it’s been longer you’ll need to restart the course. If it’s been a while since your pool session, we strongly recommend booking an additional pool review before your open water dives to get your skills back up to speed. Pool review: $105 per student ($130 solo).

Note: if your course academics were not completed via PADI eLearning, an additional $70 certification fee applies.

The $400 fee includes gear rental, charter fees, all instruction, and certification.

Non-PADI or Non-SDI Referrals

We accept international and global referral forms from any agency. Your form must be properly completed, signed, and dated by your original instructor and no older than 12 months.

Non-PADI to PADI — $600 per student: In addition to your open water dives, you’ll complete a short classroom session and a confined water session with your instructor before heading to the ocean. The course takes approximately 1.5 days and results in a full PADI certification. Includes gear rental, entry and charter fees, all instruction, and certification.

Non-SDI to SDI — $470 per student: Includes gear rental, entry and charter fees, all instruction, and certification.

PADI open water diver students entering the water

If you already hold a PADI Scuba Diver certification and would like to upgrade to a PADI Open Water Diver certification, we can help you with that, too! The time and cost involved do depend on a few factors such as what course sections have been signed off by your initial instructor, what course materials you still have access to, when your last dive was, etc. Please do not hesitate to contact us for a quote!

Once you’re certified, the natural next step is the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course — 5 adventure dives over 2 days that take you deeper, introduce you to new dive environments, and sharpen the skills you built during your Open Water certification. Many of our students do both courses back to back during a Key Largo trip.

“Found a solution no matter what”

When bad weather prevented our boat dives, Robert and his team arranged lagoon dives to make sure I still completed my Open Water certification on schedule. Yvonne handled all communication and scheduling flawlessly. Highly recommend Scuba Fun for getting certified.

“Santa Claus, Poseidon, or the love child of the two”

Picked Scuba-Fun on a whim from a Google search and everything from the first call was phenomenal. Robert certified me — an incredible personality with such a wealth of diving knowledge that the whole certification process was a breeze. He knew everyone on the dive boats which made you feel like part of the dive community. I’m still not sure whether he is Santa Claus, Poseidon, or the love child of the two — but I would highly recommend him as an instructor.

Tim D. · Open Water Certification

“Traveled from DC — worth every mile”

I traveled from Washington DC to Key Largo specifically to do my open water checkout dives with Scuba-Fun and had an amazing experience. Robert made me feel safe and comfortable in the water and properly instructed me on all the skills necessary to succeed. Also he’s hilarious — so it was a great time.

How long does it take to get PADI Open Water certified in Key Largo?

The in-water portion of the course takes 2 to 3 days at Scuba-Fun, depending on your schedule. Before arriving you’ll complete the PADI eLearning online, which takes most students 6 to 8 hours at their own pace. On the 3-day schedule, day one is a full day in the pool followed by two half-days of open water training dives on days two and three. On the 2-day schedule, pool skills run in the morning and open water dives take place in the afternoons. We offer flexible scheduling to fit your trip — contact us to discuss what works best for you.

Do I need to complete eLearning before arriving?

Yes — and we strongly recommend starting it as early as possible. Not completing the PADI eLearning before you arrive may mean we cannot start on the scheduled day. From the moment you register you have 12 months to finish the online portion. You can preview the course for free on PADI’s website before purchasing — just create a free PADI account and redeem the free Introduction to Open Water Diver eLearning.

How many students are in each class?

Never more than 4 students per instructor — and that is a firm cap, not a guideline. PADI allows up to 8 students per instructor. We choose to limit our classes to 4, which means your instructor can adapt the pace to your individual comfort level, spend extra time on skills you want to repeat, and give you the kind of attention that actually makes a difference to the kind of diver you become.

Can I complete my Open Water certification if I started elsewhere?

Yes — we welcome referral students. If you’ve already completed your eLearning and pool training with another instructor but still need your four open water training dives, we can certify you in as little as two half days. For PADI referrals you’ll need your student record and course progress form filled out, signed, and dated by your original instructor, with the last course activity within 12 months. We also accept non-PADI and non-SDI referrals with the appropriate international referral form. See our Referral Program section above for full details and pricing.

Can I fly after completing my certification dives?

Yes — but you need to allow sufficient time for excess nitrogen to leave your body before flying. After your final certification dive we recommend waiting a minimum of 18 hours before boarding a flight. The Divers Alert Network (DAN) recommends at least 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive and at least 18 hours after multiple days of diving. When in doubt, wait longer — it’s always the safer choice.

What is included in the $679 course fee?

The $679 fee covers everything you need to complete your certification — PADI eLearning, all course materials, gear rental (mask, fins, snorkel, BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tanks), entry fees, charter fees, all instruction, and your PADI certification. The only things not included are lunch, gratuity for your instructor and boat crew, and applicable tax.

What is the minimum age for Open Water certification?

Students must be at least 10 years old to enrol in the PADI Open Water Diver course. Students aged 10 to 11 receive a Junior Open Water Diver certification, which has some depth restrictions until they turn 15. There is no maximum age — we regularly certify divers in their 60s and 70s. All participants must complete a PADI Medical Questionnaire before the course, and a doctor’s clearance is required if you answer yes to any of the medical questions.

What is the difference between the 2-day and 3-day schedule?

Both schedules cover exactly the same course content and result in the same full PADI Open Water Diver certification — the difference is timing. On the 3-day schedule, day one is entirely in the pool which gives you a full unhurried day to master your skills before heading to the ocean. Days two and three are each a half-day of open water dives. On the 2-day schedule, pool skills run in the morning and open water dives take place in the afternoons of both days. If you have more flexibility in your trip, the 3-day schedule is generally more relaxed. If you’re short on time, the 2-day schedule works just as well.

What if sea conditions prevent open water dives?

Safety always comes first. If ocean conditions are unsuitable for training dives, we conduct your open water dives in a protected mangrove lagoon instead — still a genuine open water environment and a genuinely beautiful place to dive. Your certification is not affected and your dives are completed on schedule. Please review our cancellation and refund policy for full details on weather-related changes.

What can I dive after I’m certified — and what comes next?

Your PADI Open Water Diver certification allows you to dive independently with a buddy to a maximum depth of 60 feet anywhere in the world — and it never expires. From here, the natural next step is the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course — 5 adventure dives over 2 days that introduce you to deeper sites, navigation, and specialty diving environments. Many of our students complete both certifications during the same Key Largo trip. Learn about the Advanced Open Water course →.
