The most common planning question we hear from visitors to Key Largo is some version of this: “I have X days — is that enough to get certified?” The answer depends on a few variables, and this guide walks through all of them. The short version: if you complete the PADI eLearning before you arrive, you can earn your Open Water certification in 2 full days in Key Largo. If you prefer the 3-day schedule — which most students find more relaxed — you’ll need three days on the water. Either way, Key Largo is one of the most efficient places in the world to get certified.

Two or three days in Key Largo, plus 8-10 hours of online study before you arrive.

The PADI Open Water Diver course requires you to complete a knowledge development phase — covering dive theory, equipment, safety procedures, and the science of scuba. You can do this in two ways:

PADI eLearning Complete everything online before you arrive in Key Largo. The eLearning covers all required academic content at your own pace and includes the course exam. Most students complete it in 6–8 hours, typically spread across a few evenings in the week before their trip.

Once you finish the eLearning, you arrive in Key Largo ready to go straight into pool skills and open water dives. No classroom day. More time on the reef.

How to access PADI eLearning: Register directly through PADI’s website and affiliate with Scuba-Fun as your dive shop, or get an access code from us directly to guarantee proper shop affiliation. You have 12 months from registration to complete the course. We recommend starting at least one week before your dive dates to avoid any last-minute pressure.

✔ Register any time after booking ✔ Complete on any device — laptop, tablet, phone ✔ 12 months to finish from registration ✔ Course exam included — taken online

Every required skill practiced in a controlled environment before you ever reach the reef.

After completing your eLearning, your in-water training begins in the pool. This is where you learn and practice every skill required for open water certification — mask clearing, buoyancy control, regulator recovery, controlled descents, emergency procedures, and more.

At Scuba-Fun, pool sessions run with a maximum of 4 students per instructor — which means your instructor knows your comfort level, can spend time on skills you want to repeat, and won’t push you forward until you’re genuinely ready.

On the 3-day schedule: the entire pool session is day one — a full, unhurried day in the water. This is the most relaxed option and the one we recommend for most students.

On the 2-day schedule: pool skills happen in the mornings of both days, with open water dives in the afternoons.

The pool session typically takes 5–7 hours total depending on your group’s pace. With 4 students maximum, the session moves efficiently without anyone getting left behind.

Four dives on Key Largo’s coral reefs — the final step to your certification.

Your four open water training dives are completed on Key Largo’s reefs inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Each dive builds on the previous one — introducing new skills, increasing depth incrementally, and moving toward the independent capability that the certification represents.

Dive 1 & 2 — typically in 20–30 feet of water, focusing on the core skills covered in the pool: buoyancy, mask clearing, navigation, and emergency procedures in a real underwater environment.

Dive 3 & 4 — slightly deeper, typically 30–40 feet, completing the remaining required skills and introducing more independent dive planning. By dive four, most students are diving with noticeably more confidence and significantly better air consumption than dive one.

All four dives are instructor-supervised. By the end of dive four, your instructor signs off your certification and you’re a PADI Open Water Diver — for life.

If sea conditions are too rough the training dives will be conducted in a protected mangrove lagoon.

The most relaxed and recommended schedule for first-time certification students.

Day 1 — Pool Day Arrive at our dive center in the morning. After a quick gear fitting and equipment briefing, you spend the full day in the pool with your instructor mastering all required skills. By the end of day one, every skill feels comfortable and you’re ready for the reef.

Approximate timing: 7:30am arrival → full day in pool → finish mid-afternoon

Day 2 — Open Water Dives 1 & 2 Board the dive boat in the afternoon for your first two open water training dives on Key Largo’s coral reefs.

Approximate timing: 1:00pm departure → 2 reef dives → return by late afternoon

Day 3 — Open Water Dives 3 & 4 → Certification Your final two training dives, often at a different reef site from day 2. After dive four, your instructor completes your certification paperwork. Your PADI digital certification card is typically available for download within 24 hours.

Approximate timing: 1:00pm departure → 2 reef dives → certification confirmed → finish by late afternoon

✔ Most relaxed pace — recommended for most students ✔ Full day in pool before any ocean diving ✔ Afternoons free on days 2 and 3 ✔ 3 full days needed in Key Largo ✔ eLearning must be complete before arriving

Everything in 2 full days — pool skills in the mornings, reef dives in the afternoons.

Day 1 — Pool Skills (Morning) + Open Water Dives 1 & 2 (Afternoon) Pool skills in the morning cover all required confined water skills. After a lunch break, you board the dive boat for your first two open water training dives in the afternoon.

Approximate timing: 7:30am arrival 9:00am pool → quick lunch break → 1:00pm boat departure → 2 reef dives → late afternoon return

Day 2 — Open Water Dives 3 & 4 (Morning or Afternoon) → Certification Your final two training dives complete the course. Certification paperwork is completed and your PADI digital card is available within 24 hours.

Approximate timing: 7:30am arrival 9:00am pool → quick lunch break → 1:00pm boat departure → 2 reef dives → certification confirmed → late afternoon return

✔ Works for tighter schedules ✔ 2 full days needed in Key Largo ✔ Slightly more intensive than the 3-day option ✔ Same certification outcome as the 3-day schedule ✔ eLearning must be complete before arriving

Planning your certification around your holiday — practical advice from the dive center.

If you have exactly 2 days: Book the 2-day schedule and make sure your eLearning is fully complete before you arrive. Plan your travel home for the day after your final dive — remember the 18-hour wait before flying.

If you have 3 days: Book the 3-day schedule. It’s more relaxed, the pool day is unhurried, and you’ll have afternoons free on days 2 and 3 to explore Key Largo, snorkel, or simply recover. It is also the better schedule for more anxious students.

If you have 4 or more days: Consider combining certification with other experiences. Many students do a Try Scuba day first to build confidence, then move into the certification course over the following 2–3 days. Others add a fun dive or snorkeling trip on their final day as a post-certification celebration.

If you’re not sure how much time you’ll have: Contact us before booking. We run courses daily and can discuss the most practical schedule for your specific travel dates. We’re genuinely flexible — if conditions change or you need to adjust mid-course, we work with you to find a solution.

Book ahead, especially in summer: Certification courses fill up fast in peak season. If you have specific dates in mind, booking in advance guarantees your spot. Last-minute availability is possible but not guaranteed in summer months.

Most students certify in 2–3 days. Here are the factors that influence the timeline.

eLearning completion The single biggest variable. Students who arrive with eLearning fully complete save a half to full day compared to those who need in-person academics. Start your eLearning as soon as you book.

Pool skills comfort level Students who are very comfortable in the water and pick up skills quickly move through the pool session faster. Students who need more practice time get it — at Scuba-Fun we don’t move forward until skills are genuinely solid. This occasionally adds time (and an additinal fee) but always results in a more confident diver.

Sea conditions Key Largo’s conditions are excellent most of the year. Occasionally weather prevents boat dives, requiring a schedule adjustment. If this happens, we conduct training dives in our protected lagoon alternative at Jules Undersea Lodge — a beautiful environment where conditions are always calm and your certification timeline stays on track.

Individual pace We cap classes at 4 students specifically so no one gets rushed. If you need an extra pool session before heading to the reef, we arrange it. An additional session is available at an extra charge. Your certification is more important than sticking to a rigid schedule.

Prior water experience Students who are experienced swimmers or who have done snorkeling, freediving, or a previous Try Scuba experience typically move through the pool session faster. Prior experience doesn’t count as certification credit, but it absolutely helps.

Common scheduling and timing questions answered honestly.

Can I get PADI certified in one day in Key Largo?

No — the PADI Open Water course requires a minimum of two days for the in-water training (pool skills plus four open water dives over at least two days). This is a PADI standard requirement, not a Scuba-Fun policy. Anyone advertising single-day full Open Water certification is either misrepresenting the program or offering a different, lesser certification. The minimum realistic timeline at Scuba-Fun is 2 full days in Key Largo, with eLearning completed before arrival.

Do I have to do eLearning or can I do classroom sessions instead?

At Scuba-Fun we currently run the Open Water course via eLearning only. You’ll complete all knowledge development online before you arrive — at your own pace, on any device, in around 8-10 hours. This saves up to two full classroom days and means more of your time in Key Largo is spent in the water. We’ll send you the eLearning link when you book.

How soon after completing certification can I dive independently?

Immediately. The moment your instructor signs off your fourth open water training dive, you are a certified PADI Open Water Diver and can dive independently with a buddy to 60 feet anywhere in the world. Your digital PADI card is typically available in the PADI app immediately. Many of our newly certified students book a fun dive the following morning.

What happens if sea conditions are bad on my dive day?

Safety always comes first. If ocean conditions are unsuitable, we conduct your open water training dives at Jules Undersea Lodge’s protected mangrove lagoon — a beautiful, calm environment where conditions are always predictable. Your certification is not delayed and your timeline stays on track. Please review our cancellation and refund policy for full details.

What’s the difference between the PADI Open Water course and a referral course?

A referral course is for students who have already completed their eLearning and pool skills with another PADI instructor or dive school and just need their four open water training dives to complete certification. At Scuba-Fun, a PADI referral course can be completed in as little as two half-days. See our Open Water Certification page for full referral pricing and requirements.

How long does PADI eLearning actually take?

Most students complete it in 8-10 hours. It consists of five knowledge development sections, each with a quiz, followed by a final exam. You can complete it in one sitting or spread it across multiple sessions — whatever suits your schedule. You have 12 months from registration to finish.

What if I run out of time and can’t finish my certification during my trip?

If you complete your eLearning and pool session but can’t finish your open water dives due to your travel schedule or weather, your course progress is valid for 12 months. You can complete your four open water dives with a PADI instructor anywhere in the world — not necessarily back at Scuba-Fun — within that window. This is called a referral and is a standard PADI provision.

Is the 2-day schedule as good as the 3-day schedule?

The certification outcome is identical. The difference is pace. The 3-day schedule gives you a full, unhurried pool day before any ocean diving — which most students find reduces anxiety and improves their open water dive performance. The 2-day schedule works well for students who are already comfortable in the water and confident in the pool from previous experience. If you’re choosing between them and don’t have a strong reason to rush, the 3-day schedule is the better experience.

Can I fly home the same day I finish my certification dives?

No — you must wait a minimum of 18 hours after your final dive before flying. This is a safety requirement to allow nitrogen absorbed during diving to safely leave your body. Plan your travel home for the day after your final dive day. If your last dives are in the morning, you may be able to fly in the late evening — but check your specific dive times and departure time carefully before booking flights.
