Ocean Conservation: Yes, you can help today!
Get involved now, it’s easy!
The ocean needs our help, especially our fragile coral reefs. Coral reefs are just a small part of the ocean, but did you know that combined, they are about the size of Nevada?
While water covers 70% of the planet, coral reefs are home to about 25% of all known marine species and are used by countless others. Today, our reefs are degrading for many reasons, and it is easy to feel powerless to do anything. But there are many ways you can help, even starting today!
There are plenty of ways you can take action, whether you are a diver, snorkeler, or landlubber with a love for the ocean. Getting involved can include supporting conservation-minded organizations such as PADI AWARE, REEF Environmental Education Foundation, and Coral Restoration Foundation. You can also take PADI Specialty Courses that teach you how to make a difference.
Take PADI Specialty Courses to learn how to make a difference every day
For example, anyone of any age can take the PADI AWARE Specialty course. The course teaches you 10 specific actions that you can take to help protect our fragile reefs. You don’t even need to be a diver or a snorkeler, and the class takes only less than an hour. You can take the class on a stand-alone basis – even from the comfort of your home – or you can add it to any PADI course: Discover Scuba Diving, Open Water Scuba Diver, and Advanced Open Water Diver. Easy! If you are looking for a good way to start becoming involved in ocean conservation, this specialty course is for you!
For certified divers, you can take the one-dive Dive Against Debris Specialty course. You will learn how to safely and responsibly remove debris from the ocean floor, and also when to leave it there because life has taken hold. Your day begins in the classroom and ends with a Dive Against Debris dive, after which you log what debris you found on PADI AWARE’s website. By the way, you can also include Dive Against Debris in your Advanced Open Water Diver course!
You can also help the ocean by becoming a knowledgeable advocate for sharks. The shark trade is devastating shark populations. And while sharks are magnificent apex predators, the Jaws-based perception of sharks is simply not accurate. The AWARE Shark Conservation Specialty Course will help you become a shark ally, through knowledge development and two dives.
