A DaY’s Schedule

Try Scuba Diving Program Overview

Classes begin in the morning with a brief classroom session, where you’ll learn the basics of scuba diving. Next, you’ll head to the pool to put on your scuba gear and practice essential skills under the guidance of your instructor. You’ll also have extra time to experience scuba diving in the pool and build confidence in the water.

If you enjoy your pool session, the instructor will guide you on an afternoon scuba dive at two reef locations. If sea conditions prevent ocean diving, we’ll take you to an alternate location, such as Jules Undersea Lodge’s protected lagoon. This is not only a safe and exciting way to dive but also an amazing opportunity to explore Key Largo’s vibrant underwater world. The full program typically concludes around 5 p.m.

For flexibility, the program can be split into two half-day sessions: pool skills on the first day and the optional open water dive on the second, making it easier to fit into your schedule.

Scuba Gear, Dive Depth & Group Size of Try Scuba Diving Programs

Try Scuba Diving Divers on Reef

The dive depth will be about 25 feet or less, allowing you to see vibrant coral reefs filled with fish and marine wildlife. You may even spot turtles, stingrays, moray eels, or even a shark!

Scuba-Fun offers the Try Scuba Diving program daily. The number of participants per instructor is no more than four students, so please reserve your spots ahead of time! Of course, this program is also available for parties with more participants!

We include all scuba gear rentals in the program, ensuring you have everything you need for an unforgettable underwater adventure. The basic scuba kit consists of a mask for clear vision, fins for smooth swimming, and a snorkel for easy breathing at the surface. You’ll also receive a BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) to help manage your buoyancy underwater and a regulator for safe and controlled breathing. A wetsuit is included to keep you comfortable and warm during your dive. With all equipment covered, you can focus on exploring the vibrant marine life and stunning coral reefs.

To participate, you must be 10 or older and either answer “no” to all questions on a medical questionnaire or have a doctor’s release stating you’re fit to scuba dive. You can review the Medical Questionnaire here before enrolling in the program.

You must also know how to swim in water too deep to stand in. Your instructor will conduct a quick swim test to assess your swimming abilities and comfort level in deeper water.

What You Need to Know About Our Try Scuba Diving Program

The Try Scuba Diving Program provides a safe and enjoyable introduction to scuba diving in both the pool and open ocean, without the need for extensive training. Please note that your experience may be affected by several unpredictable factors.

01

Swimming Ability

You must be able to swim and feel at ease in deep water. A brief pool swim test (two laps without touching the bottom or edge) will be conducted by your instructor. If you’re not comfortable in the water, open water dives will not be allowed, and no refunds will be given.

02

Ear Clearing

You must be able to equalize your air spaces to scuba dive. If you’ve never felt ear or sinus pressure while swimming or diving in a pool, you’ll likely have no trouble. Your instructor will help identify any issues during the morning pool session.

03

Excitement

Feeling a mix of excitement and nerves is completely normal when trying scuba diving for the first time. If at any point you feel too anxious or uncomfortable to continue, your instructor will stop the instruction or dive immediately, following your wishes.

04

Age & Health

Participants must be at least 10 years old and either answer “no” to all questions on our medical questionnaire or provide a doctor’s release confirming they are fit to scuba dive. You can review the full Medical Questionnaire [here].

05

Dive Length

Your instructor will ensure you have the best possible scuba experience within your skill and comfort level. Depending on your skills and confidence, dive times and activities may be shortened or adjusted to keep you safe and comfortable.

06

Cancellations

Be sure to review our cancellation policy. Refunds are not available if a class ends early because of limited swimming ability, other challenges, or if a student chooses to stop the course.

Are the pool and boat at the store location?

The pool and dive boat are located just a few minutes from our dive shop by car. Please ensure you have your own transportation to get there.

Do I have to be a good swimmer?

No need to be a strong swimmer — just comfortable in the water!
During the pool session, your instructor will guide you through a short swim test of two easy laps without standing or holding on to the sides. This helps ensure you’re confident and relaxed in deeper water before diving.
If you’re not quite ready to complete the swim test, your instructor will end the program early for your safety. Please note that refunds cannot be provided in this case.

What if I get seasick?

If you’re worried about getting seasick, you’re definitely not alone — it’s a common concern for many first-time divers! The good news is that most people feel much better as soon as they’re in the water. To help prevent seasickness, we recommend taking a non-drowsy motion sickness remedy (like Bonine® or Dramamine®) before your trip, eating a light breakfast, and staying hydrated. Once on board, try to keep your eyes on the horizon and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. Our crew is always happy to help you feel comfortable and make your day on the water as enjoyable as possible!

Will I get credit toward a PADI Open Water Diver course?

The Try Scuba Diving program is a fun and educational introduction to scuba, designed to let you experience diving without the commitment of a full certification course. You receive a little credit toward the PADI Open Water Diver course, and it typically does not include any monetary credit, as the time and resources for the Open Water Diver Course remain the same. The skills and confidence you gain, however, will give you an excellent head start if you choose to continue your scuba journey. Many participants discover their love for diving through this program and go on to earn their full certification — your instructor will be happy to help you take that next exciting step! Contact us if you are unsure whether to book a Try Scuba Diving program or a scuba certification course. We’d be happy to help find the approach for you.

Is parking available?

Yes, we have a parking lot adjacent to the store, and free parking is available at the pool site and marina.

Can I split the program up into two days?

Absolutely! You can do the pool session on one day, and the open water dives on another – as long as it is within 14 days.

What if I decide to quit the program on the day of?

We completely understand — sometimes scuba diving can feel a bit overwhelming, and not everyone feels ready to continue once they start. You’re always free to stop at any time if you feel uncomfortable. However, please note that once the program begins, we’re unable to offer refunds, as your instructor, equipment, and boat spaces are reserved specifically for you. You are most welcome to join the afternoon boat trip to snorkel the reefs instead. Our team will always do their best to support you, encourage you, and help you feel confident in the water — but your comfort and safety will always come first.
